Civil Liberties: Language of Silencing
Language of Silencing is part of The AjA Project’s Civil Liberties fellowship program, featuring six San Diego-based fellows from immigrant and refugee backgrounds to engage with the history of Japanese-American incarceration and its relevance to present-day civil liberty struggles.
2025 marks 83 years since Executive Order 9066, which authorized the forceful removal and incarceration of over 125,000 Japanese-Americans— including children— to concentration camps during WWII. This included 1,150 Japanese-Americans from San Diego, who had to fit the entirety of their lives in one luggage as they were boarded onto trains from Sante Fe Depot to the camps.
Over six months, the fellows researched how language holds power to silence our civil rights. With support from the Japanese American Historical Society of San Diego (JAHSSD), fellows looked over archival materials and heard firsthand of the generational impacts of incarceration. Each page of this final project blends the fellows’ personal histories and its parallels to the stories of Japanese-American families. These stories are further brought to life by using Augmented Reality to create digital artifacts— to show that historical archives are not static but can be reinterpreted and evolve over time.
