The San Diego Storytelling Festival
STORYTELLERS OF SAN DIEGO AND CORONADO PUBLIC LIBRARY PRESENT THE SAN DIEGO STORYTELLING FESTIVAL AT THE CORONADO LIBRARY
Experience the power of storytelling at the 13th annual San Diego Storytelling Festival on Saturday, March 18th at the Coronado Library. Join us for a day of free performances and workshops, open to all ages and backgrounds, where the art of storytelling will be celebrated and brought to life.
The San Diego Storytelling Festival will feature performances by award-winning local storytellers, and also introduce visiting storytellers –Brandon Spars, an author and five-time winner of the MOTH Story Slam from Sonoma, California, and Marianne Christensen, a poet, and author from Copenhagen, Denmark.
In addition to the performances, the festival will offer workshops led by experienced storytellers, providing a hands-on learning experience. These workshops will cover topics such as creating your own stories, turning travel into stories, and shadow puppet theater with Tania Yager. These workshops will be led by professional storytellers and are open to everyone, regardless of experience level.
Some unique features of the festival are a “Woven Stories” session with Marsha Orr weaving a basket on stage in conjunction with stories of baskets and weaving; “Real People, Real Stories” highlighting the cultures and contributions of the South Asian community: and veteran’s stories presented by San Diego literary group So Say We All. The day will begin at 10:30 am with jazz by the Young Lions and will continue with performances and workshops every hour, concluding at 6 pm with Voices at the Water’s Edge (4-5;30pm,) an annual story concert.
The festival is designed to be a fun and educational experience for the whole family. Families are welcome, and the festival will provide several interactive performances just for children: kamishibai (Japanese paper theater), a children’s book author, Melanie Lococo, as well as featuring student storytellers from Silver Strand Elementary debuting their stories on the main stage, joined by adult tellers from the library’s Storytelling Institute.
In the words of someone at last year’s festival: “I laughed with the audiences, sang with the storytellers, and held my breath with the pilot who was lost in Alaska. I’ll be back next year and bring friends.” Festival organizer Marilyn McPhie says, “Whether you're a seasoned storyteller or just looking for a fun day out, this festival is the perfect opportunity to experience the timeless power of storytelling.” From traditional folktales to contemporary stories, the San Diego Storytelling Festival is a unique opportunity to celebrate the art of storytelling and to connect with others who share a passion for this powerful form of expression.
