We, the La Jolla region of the Horseless Carriage Club of America along with our neighboring clubs the San Diego region and the Model T club are eager to present our antique cars for the public to see and enjoy. Cars will start arriving at the Automotive Museum in Balboa Park at 7AM and will have started on the route by 9:00 AM. The two laps of the 1915 road race route in Point Loma will start at 10:15 and last to about an hour with a two hour car show in Liberty Station from noon to 2PM. Lots of details including routes and schedules are available on our website as well as a preview of the cars signed up.
This is mostly a community event to allow people to see these cars from the very early years in operation. It is also a celebration of a famous road race that took place in Point Loma in 1915. The road race was used as a kick off for the Panama California Expo, for which Balboa Park was created. 50,000 people attended the road race and subsequently went to the expo. Eighteen cars started the race but most did not finish. The winner averaged over 65 mph in 1915, on dirt and with 4 1/2" wide tires on wooden spoke wheels. There is more information about the original race on our website, hcfi.org/sdexcursion
