Axel Foley (Eddie Murphy) is a streetwise detective from down-and-out Detroit, but when an old friend is murdered on the coast, he takes leave of his hard-nosed beat to investigate a criminal conspiracy hiding beneath the glitzy playground of Southern California’s 1%. The case soon leads Foley on a comic rampage across the 90210, filled with cons, break-ins, and practical jokes in pursuit of an art-dealing gangster (Steven Berkoff) in this 1984 genre-bending classic, which cemented Murphy’s transition from SNL prodigy to full-blown cinematic superstar.
Director Martin Brest helms a top-notch Don Simpson/Jerry Bruckheimer actioner, powered by a livewire performance by Murphy, great supporting turns from Judge Reinhold, John Ashton, and Lisa Eilbacher, and Harold Faltermeyer’s utterly iconic (and oh-so-'80s) score.
