Commotion Dance Theater

Rochester, NY - Commotion Dance Theater will perform April 27 – 29, 2023 at 8 PM with a program of new dance-theater pieces at MuCCC, 142 Atlantic Avenue. Admission is $10 in advance and at the door. The program will feature work by Laurie MacFarlane and Ruben T. Ornelas, made in collaboration with other artists. According to Ornelas, “The evening will include dances paired with experimental film, electronic music, steel drums, sound collage, and sculpture. We have been very fortunate to be able to work across disciplines with such a talented group of artists.” MacFarlane premieres the light-hearted “To Each Their Own,” set to a sound score by Dan Evans Farkas. “Travels Through Time” interweaves spoken word, movement and gesture, and is based on the performers’ memories. The solo “Full or Empty” incorporates a handmade film created by Martha Schermerhorn from found images. Ornelas offers “Suite” and “Soca,” contemporary dances set to Trinidadian pan music, performed live by Ted Canning. “Which Goose,” a duet with Angela Lopez, is set to music by Jason Roebke, and performed in tandem with films by artist Alessandra Vorontsova. The program ends with a dance and music improvisation directed by Ornelas, featuring musicians Matìas Homar and Ted Canning, and a sculpture by Susan Ferrari Rowley. Dancers include Laura D’Amico, Angela Lopez, Alaina Olivieri, Donetta Tchoroleev, and Roy Wood. Ruben T. Ornelas has presented his work in North America, Central America, and East Africa. He has been a Fulbright Specialist to Mexico and Guatemala and an Artist in Residence at the National Hispanic Cultural Center in New Mexico. He is currently a recipient of a Creatives Rebuild NY grant, working in the GLOW Creatives collaborative with nine other artists and three regional arts councils to bring arts programming to primarily rural areas of Western NY. Laurie MacFarlane has presented her work in a variety of settings, from the proscenium stage to art galleries, sidewalks, and storefronts, throughout the US, in Toronto, Canada and Puebla, Mexico. She is an Artist in Residence at MuCCC and in 2022 was awarded a NYS Choreographers Initiative Grant from the NYS DanceForce, a NYSCA Partner. All programs are subject to change.
