The Eric Carle Story Show

TYKEs' launches its 20th season with a world-famous caterpillar TYKEs (Theatre Young Kids Enjoy) launches its 20th live-on-stage season with The Eric Carle Story Show, running for one weekend only, November 9 and 10. The production is based on Carle’s world-famous Very Hungry Caterpillar character, along with storylines from three of his popular books: From Head to Toe, The Very Quiet Cricket and Little Cloud. Appropriate for kids ages two and up, performances take place at the JCC Hart Theater, 1200 Edgewood Avenue in Brighton at 11 a.m. and at 2p.m. on both Saturday, November 9 and on Sunday, November 10. Tickets cost $22 ($20 for JCC members) and are available at tykestheatre.org. Created by Jonathan Rockefeller of Rockefeller Studios, this innovative new stage production weaves together several different Eric Carle stories, brought to life by world-class puppeteers and 45 handcrafted puppets. From Head to Toe builds confidence with its “I can do it” message, encouraging children to imitate the movements of diverse animals. The Very Quiet Cricket cannot make a sound until he meets another cricket, inspiring children to be resilient and never give up. The mischievous Little Cloud drifts across the sky to form different shapes before rejoining its group of clouds, teaching kids to use their imaginations and to feel empowered to make their own unique choices. Born in Syracuse, New York, Carle is known around the world for his cleverly designed picture books for young children. His best-known work, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, has been translated into 66 languages and sold over 50 million copies. TYKEs’ founder Freyda Schneider explains, “In children’s literature, there are a small handful of characters that are just so iconic and so inherently, instantly relatable that virtually any child immediately forms a connection. The Very Hungry Caterpillar is that quintessential character. Seeing him – along with Carle’s other amazing and distinctive characters – come alive on stage is the most perfect kickoff to TYKEs’ 20th anniversary season. It’s an honor to bring this new show to Rochester audiences.” Continuing TYKEs’ 20th season is Press Here, January 11 to 19, based on the longest-running picture book on the New York Times Bestseller list. Next on stage is Hercules, a special program featuring 60 local children in this ‘Missoula show-in-a-week’ experience, March 10 to 15. The season culminates with Rapunzel, March 29 to April 6, a modern adaptation hilariously written by the creators of the TV shows Friends and Veronica’s Closet. TYKEs consistently ranks as the #1 Children’s Theatre Company in Rochester by KidsOutandAbout.com, and one of the top places in all of Rochester to bring kids – for the 14th consecutive year, and also is rated #1 in arts education.
