The Off-Monroe Players, Rochester’s Gilbert and Sullivan Company, is delighted to announce its annual Winter Play production: William S. Gilbert’s Tom Cobb, or Fortune’s Toy, running Friday, January 30 through Sunday, February 1, 2026 at Downtown United Presbyterian Church, 121 North Fitzhugh Street, 14614. As always, admission is free but reservations are requested. (See information below for details.)
In addition to two yearly productions of the great operettas by composer Arthur Sullivan and author William S. Gilbert, the Off-Monroe Players present a winter program exploring the many non-musical plays by Gilbert. This will be their first production of Tom Cobb, directed by Tristan Berlet and Marshall Kelley.
Gilbert’s farce was a tremendous success at its premiere in London in April,1875. The London Times reviewer praised Gilbert extravagantly: “He loves to make his audience roar by flinging at them a palpable absurdity, to stimulate their admiration by a succession of sparkling lines ... bringing into dramatic shape more wit, humour, and truthful satire than would go to the making of half-a-dozen ordinary comedies.”
In this play, a poor Doctor named Tom Cobb is given the opportunity to clear his debts when a patient sharing his name dies. However, complications arise when Tom is forced to confront the reality that he cannot remain a disembodied spirit. The forces of Victorian society, in the forms of wealth, law, newspapers, and aestheticism, combine to create a sudden, and hilarious, conclusion.
As Tom Cobb runs about 65 minutes and will be performed without an intermission, the usual refreshments will be offered before and after the show. Audience members are cordially invited to stay after each performance to mix-and-mingle with the cast members, directors, and production team.
