The Off-Monroe Players, Rochester’s Gilbert and Sullivan Company since 1977, is pleased to present its fall 2025 production: a double bill that brings “old” and “new” G&S together in one package.
The “old” is a Gilbert and Sullivan favorite, and their first great success, the one-act Trial by Jury (1875). This fast-paced, tuneful satire of British law and lawsuits (in this case, for breach of promise of marriage) is celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2025 and is still going strong.
Its companion piece is something new: Less Miserable: Gilbert and Sullivan’s Improbable New Musical, by Susan Ellerby. This award-winning one-act premiered at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and was given an American premiere at the Rochester Fringe by the Off-Monroe Players. In the hereafter, Gilbert and Sullivan wager they can remake the plot of the world's longest-running musical with their songs and topsy-turvy plot twists. These twists (spoiler: nobody dies) make Les Mis less miserable!
Performances take place from November 14-23, Fridays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. The November 15 performance will be ASL interpreted.
All performances will take place in the Celebration Hall at Downtown United Presbyterian Church, 121 North Fitzhugh Street, 14614.
All Off-Monroe Players performances are free, but reservations are recommended. For more information, go to www.off-monroeplayers.org or write to [email protected]
