The Erie Canal, which celebrates its bicentennial this year, was instrumental in establishing Rochester as one of America’s first boomtowns. The canal not only fueled Rochester’s economic development, but it also helped diversify the local population as it spurred the settlement of immigrants and migrants with varying religious, social, and political viewpoints.
This tour, part of Roc the Riverway Weekend, details the canal’s rise and decline and showcases the many ways in which the waterway transformed the Rochester community.
Meet on the North Terrace of the Rundel Memorial Building.
Registration is strongly encouraged, but not required.
*In case of inclement weather, tour may be canceled
