RICHMOND FIRST A civic organization dedicated to responsible citizenship and the improvement of government since 1919. NOTE: Our meeting will be held on January 17th, the 3rd Wednesday of January, rather than our usual 2nd Wednesday. "21st Century Richmond: Politics, Policy, and Governance" Most are in agreement that Richmond’s City Charter needs re-evaluating, and that substantial changes should be considered. But the devil is in the details. Should we maintain our current strong Mayor form of governance, or return to the strong City Manager model? How many members should serve on City Council, and what should be their defined roles? How can the Mayor, Council, and School Board work more effectively together to get things done for Richmond? Two authorities on Richmond government will discuss the final report of the City Charter Review Commission, issued last summer and available at rva.gov/richmond-city-council/richmond-city-charter-review-commission. Dr. Thad Williamson, Associate Professor of Leadership Studies, Philosophy, Politics, Economics, and Law at the University of Richmond, chaired the commission. He will be joined by his colleague, Dr. Julian M. Hayter, Associate Professor of Leadership Studies at the University of Richmond’s Jepson School. The two are co-authors, with Amy L. Howard, of a forthcoming book, “The Making of 21 st Century Richmond: Politics, Policy, and Governance, 1988-2016.” Of special importance to our Richmond First membership: How can the Commission’s most important recommendations and ideas for change get a fair hearing? What can we do to further this important work? Wednesday, January 17, 2024 Also, during our January meeting, we will present the 2023 Richmond First Good Government and Leadership Award to Jim Ukrop. This award has been given 45 times in our 104-year history to outstanding forerunners in our community. The last was presented in 2019 before COVID. Please arrive around 11:30 a.m. to check in, with lunch served at noon. The program begins at 12:30 p.m. and will conclude around 1:30 p.m. The meeting will be held at the Willow Oaks Country Club, 6228 Forest Hill Avenue, Richmond 23225.
