Opening the 2024/25 season, VCUarts Theatre is proud to present Ntozake Shange’s Tony Award winning choroepoem “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide/ when the rainbow is enuf.” This historic and groundbreaking piece explores the triumphs and the challenges of growing up as a little Black girl in America. It is about self discovery and self affirmation, embracing the difficult and inspirational journey from childhood to personhood and womanhood. Through the use of story, poetry, music and dance, the work portrays an undeniably raw and authentic narrative of survival and femininity. VCUarts Theatre first produced “For Colored Girls…” in 2008 and is very excited to once again bring this classic piece of art and history to a new generation of artists, students, and audiences. Dr. T, Professor Tawnya Pettiford-Wates is directing this new production of “For Colored Girls…” and is thrilled to remount this dramatic work and to continue the legacy of bringing this beautiful and transformative theatrical experience to new audiences young and old. Dr. T performed as part of the original Tony Award Winning company of the New York Shakespeare Festival’s Broadway production and First National Tour of “For Colored Girls…” …………………………………..
