Dr. Gregory Abel, MD, PhD, Harvard, Director's Distinguished Visiting Scholars Seminar Series
The Director’s Distinguished Visiting Scholars Seminar Series is a quarterly series that features national and international visionaries in the field of science each year.
During each visit, we engage in lively discussions on how the latest science advances are influencing new strategic approaches in cancer prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship.
Each speaker for this series partakes in a scientific seminar, largely directed to our medical professionals and scientists. In addition to this, we organize smaller, interactive formats throughout the visit for students/trainees as well as members of our community to engage in conversation with the speaker.
Dr. Abel is an outcomes researcher and hematologic oncologist at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI) and Harvard Medical School, where he is a Professor of Medicine. He serves as Co-Chair of the DFCI Ethics Advisory Committee, Director of Clinical Research for the Division of Population Sciences, and Research Director for Dana-Farber’s new Center for Cancer and Aging. His research lab applies health services research methods to understand the experiences of patients with blood cancers and develop interventions to improve their care. Dr. Abel is specifically interested in evaluating how cancer and its therapies affect outcomes such as function and quality of life. Through his work and collaboration with researchers in oncology, hematology, geriatrics, bioethics, and energy balance, he aims to ameliorate the impact of cancer and its treatment from diagnosis to the end of life. Dr. Abel is also a poet, and has published several works in journals such as JAMA and the Journal of Clinical Oncology.
