Richmond's Urban Slavery Walking Tour

This walking tour will visit four proximal locations in downtown Richmond that illustrate urban slavery into the city’s Early Republic landscape. Examining the realities of urban slavery through the lens of the John Marshall House and pre-antebellum Richmond will help visitors broaden their understanding of American chattel slavery, the system’s relationship with the law, and urban slavery’s impact on society. The Urban Slavery Walking Tour runs approximately 90 minutes, starting and ending at the John Marshall House. There may be opportunities to sit at each location, but be prepared to be on your feet for the duration. We recommend guests bring good walking shoes, bottled water, and sun protection if needed. This tour is rain or shine, so be prepared for the weather. There will be access to bathrooms at the beginning or end of the tour, but not during. Tour commences at the John Marshall House (818 E. Marshall Street, Richmond, VA). Please sign-in 10-15 minutes ahead of your tour in the Cellar Museum Shop. Tickets are $20/person; $15 for Preservation Virginia Members; free for children 6 and under. Tickets are non-refundable, advanced tour registration required.
