Richmond Philharmonic presents "Romeo & Juliet - A Symphonic Evolution"

The Richmond Philharmonic is very pleased to invite you to our first Masterworks concert of the 2024-2025 season, "Romeo & Juliet: A Symphonic Evolution." Please join us on October 27th at 4pm to hear a diverse Romeo & Juliet repertoire. These pieces span over a hundred years of the re-telling of this classic love story, starting all the way back in 1867. We will also be hosting a 3pm pre-concert discussion with music director Peter Wilson and VPM classical host Mike Goldberg. Richmond Philharmonic concerts are free. We'd love to see you there! While you're waiting for the concert, please enjoy some Romeo & Juliet fun facts: • At least 14 classical composers have used the story of Romeo and Juliet as their source material, dating as far back as 1776. • Of these 14 composers, two used Italian sources as their inspiration and not Shakespeare. • At least as many film composers as classical composers wrote music for motion pictures about Romeo and Juliet, dating back to 1936. • Bernstein composed his music to West Side Story in 1957 — within a year of Kabalevsky composing his “Musical Sketches to the Tragedy by W. Shakespeare” (Romeo and Juliet, Op. 56), which was completed in 1956. For more information about this and other RPO concerts (including directions to St. Christopher's School), please visit our website at richmondphilharmonic.org.
