Though fought far from Richmond, the effects of that great Pennsylvania battle 161 years ago were deeply felt here, by both soldiers and civilians. The lives and deaths of participants now buried here, such as Major Benjamin Watkins Leigh, son of a U.S. Senator, and John Allan, foster brother of Edgar Allan Poe, illuminate the story of an engagement that marked the “high water” of the Confederate States.
This tour is free of charge and brought to you by the "Friends of Shockoe Hill Cemetery," a citizens' group that helps the City of Richmond maintain and improve this historic site. Park in the Cemetery, entering through either the Hospital Street of Bates Street gates.
