Join us for a free talk by New York Times bestselling author Sadeqa Johnson on her new book, “Keeper of Lost Children.” The book portrays how one American woman’s vision in post WWII Germany will tie together three people in an unexpected way.
Ethel Gathers, the proud wife of an American officer, discovers an orphanage filled with abandoned mixed-race children of German women and Black American GIs. Determined to help, she sets out to find them homes. Meanwhile, Philadelphia-born Ozzie Phillips volunteers for the recently desegregated Army and meets Jelka, a local woman whose relationship with him will change everything.
Years later in Maryland, Sophia Clark earns a spot at a prestigious boarding school, only to uncover a secret that sends her on a quest to unravel her identity. “Keeper of Lost Children” explores how one woman’s vision alters countless lives and shows that love—familial, parental, forbidden, and self-love—can be transcendent.
Johnson is a New York Times Bestselling author of six novels. Her previous novel, “The House of Eve” was an instant New York Times Best Seller, Reese’s Book Club selection, Target Book Club pick, nominated for a NAACP Image Award and a 2023 Goodreads Choice award finalist. Her book “Yellow Wife” was one of Oprah Magazine’s 27 most anticipated winter historical fiction books of 2021 and won the Library of Virginia’s 2022 People’s Choice Literary Award for Fiction, among other honors.
A book signing will follow the talk. This book will be available at the Virginia Shop.
