Knit in Public Day at LVA

Worldwide Knit in Public Day encourages knitters to come together to enjoy one another’s company and teach beginners how to knit. Join us for a “Knit In” at the Library of Virginia! Bring your knitting project to work on and view historic knitting patterns — as well as items newly created from them — and other items from our collections related to fiber crafts. See a sock-knitting machine and other demonstrations and listen to knitting-related lectures. Enjoy refreshments and register for door prizes! A digital copy of an item from the Library’s collection, Little Red Riding Hood's Knitting Book (1923), will be available for download. The event’s two lectures will be livestreamed for those who can’t attend. 11:00 a.m. KT VAUGHAN | Knit Like Defarge: Encoding Meaning Into Your Stitches KT Vaughan, a librarian by day and knitting-pattern designer by night, is distracted by people knitting in novels and movies. A Tale of Two Cities was one of her favorite books growing up, so she’s had a long relationship with Madame Defarge and the mystery of how she could encode names into her knitting! Can’t attend the lecture in person? Register here to watch via Zoom! 1:00 p.m. NICOLE BROWN | “instructing them in sewing &c”: Black Girls, Knitting, and the Williamsburg Bray School Nicole Brown, program development manager at the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, is a public historian who portrays Ann Wager, the white teacher at the Williamsburg Bray School, the oldest extant building dedicated to the education of Black children in the United States. Brown is also a graduate assistant for William & Mary’s Bray School Lab and a Ph.D. student in American studies at the university. She is coediting a book titled The Williamsburg Bray School, 1760–1774: A History Through Records, Reflections, and Rediscovery, slated for release in November 2024. Can’t attend the lecture in person? Register here to watch via Zoom! For more information, contact Nan Carmack at [email protected] or 804.692.3762.
