Central Illinois Hosta Society Meeting

The Central Illinois Hosta Society will meet on Tuesday, July 19th at 6 p.m. at the garden of Carol Koch, 465 S. Montana Ave., Morton. Koch's garden is situated on a smaller city lot as far as Morton yards are considered, however, she has used every space tastefully. Koch moved into her house 35 years ago. A mound of dirt was piled between two soft maple trees from the previous homeowner's construction of a family room addition. Koch used the mound to start her garden. Koch's mother shared some of her Hosta "undulata marginatas" and Hosta "plantigineas" with her and thus began her hosta gardening. Slowly Koch was introduced to new varieties of hostas from Walt Helmick and Hornbaker Gardens. As her hosta garden was taking off, so was her daylily flower garden. Koch visited friends in North Carolina who had a neighbor with a hillside covered with daylilies. The neighbor shared some daylily catalogs and soon Koch was planting lots of $3 to $4 lilies. It didn't take long before she began eliminating these and purchasing more upscale lilies. Five years ago, Koch was asked to have her garden on the Region 2 Daylily Convention Garden Tour which further escalated her desire for newer lilies. Koch's garden has also been on the Midwest Regional Hosta Convention Garden Tour in 2001, along with local garden walks.
For the program, Ella Maxwell will present, "Bees". Maxwell has hives at her home and will provide a wealth of information on how to get started and provide a wonderful overview.
Refreshments and a garden tour begin at 6 p.m. followed by the meeting and program at 6:30 p.m. Please bring a lawn chair.
