The Dance Studio to Celebrate “Stars of Today, Tomorrow and Always” at May 10th Recital

— Celebrating 42 years of “A Love of Dance,” this year’s event will once again bring together generations of dancers for its annual showcase of tap, ballet, jazz, and pointe performances — Richmond, VA, May 6, 2025 - The Dance Studio — celebrated as Richmond’s traditional dance school since 1983 — will raise the curtain on its much-anticipated annual recital with this year’s theme of “Stars of Today, Tomorrow and Always”, on Saturday, May 10 at 6:30pm, at Fairmount Christian Church in Mechanicsville. Tickets may be purchased in advance at The Dance Studio or at the door on recital day for $17. A limited number of VIP seats in the first two rows are available for $20. Founded and directed by Judith Yarbrough Matassa, whose career now spans more than four decades, the school will showcase dancers ages 3 to 80 in a program of ballet, tap, jazz, and pointe numbers that highlight the joy of movement at every age. “Each year our recital reminds me why I opened the doors back in 1983 — to share the magic of dance with the local community,” says Matassa. “This year, almost twenty of our performers are second-generation dancers, following in the footsteps of their mothers who once trained, and in some cases still train, with me. They truly are the stars of tomorrow.” Located in Lakeside’s historic “The Hub” shopping center, The Dance Studio offers classes five days a week, with classes serving first-timers as well as experienced dancers in a variety of disciplines. New classes enroll each Spring for all ages. Visit The Dance Studio website for the latest details and upcoming events. About The Dance Studio Richmond native Judith Yarbrough Matassa — a Hermitage High School graduate and Longwood College alumna — fell in love with dance at age four under the tutelage of Coralease Wells. She later honed her craft in New York, Washington, D.C., Myrtle Beach, and Orlando, studying with luminaries such as Fedor Lensky, Violette Verdy, Thalia Mara, Luigi, Roni Mahler, Karen Hebert, Debbie Dee, Frank Hatchett, Al Gilbert, Thommie Walsh, Jerry Rose, and Pamela Bolling. A former performer with the Richmond Ballet Company, Matassa also appeared at Fort Lee and the historic John Marshall Hotel during her youth and served for many years as an assistant instructor at the Wells School of Dance. Additionally, she studied with Dance in Disney Shoes at Walt Disney World in Florida. In 1983 she founded The Dance Studio in Richmond, where she continues to teach ballet, tap, jazz, pointe, and exercise classes to students ages 3–80. Each year she choreographs, costumes, and directs a showcase recital featuring her students, while also bringing dance education to nursery and private schools across the region.
