A leader in the Russian opposition People’s Freedom Party, Kara-Murza has survived poisonings and imprisonment that sought to punish him for his advocacy of sanctions against top Russian officials and his public opposition to the invasion of Ukraine. His August 2024 release from solitary confinement in Siberia was part of the largest East-West prisoner exchange since the Cold War, negotiated by the U.S. and German governments.
