Maggie Walker Senior Art Exhibition: In Flight to take place at ArtWorks Gallery Richmond, Virginia May 10, 2024, through May 18, 2024.
For months, and in some cases, years, eight seniors at Maggie Walker Governor’s School have been working tirelessly to prepare for their final art presentation. The Maggie Walker Senior Art Exhibition will highlight the work of Kristin Bishop, Lucie Bouton, Sydney Brewer, Yeeva Chunnanond, Rachel Dai, Sadie Hall, Izzy List, and Lambrini Phillos.
Students of Maggie Walker’s advanced Art 4 & 5 classes spend a year–or two–focusing on building a body of work centered around a single personal theme. These classes shape each student’s work through group and individual critiques, gallery visits, and most importantly, hours of studio time spent producing art. These students have worked tirelessly to prepare their portfolios to share with family, friends, and the Richmond community in a culminating representation of their dedication to the arts throughout high school.
This year’s show’s name, In Flight, represents a fun and creative portrayal of the unique artwork each senior has worked so hard to produce. As these seniors buckle their seatbelts and prepare to fly away into the next stage of their lives, this exhibition shows how hard they have worked to get to where they are now. With the work of eight talented students on display, a wide range of individual topics will be explored and expressed. Kristin Bishop experiments with figures to create alcohol marker drawings. Lucie Bouton creates multimedia surrealism that explores human interactions and emotions. Sydney Brewer turns fantastical worlds of imagination into large sculptures. Yeeva Chunnanond’s work is all in video form, centering around identity. Rachel Dai explores figures and animation through digital art. Sadie Hall paints colorful collages that jump out of her canvases. Izzy List reflects on the world around her by primarily painting birds. Lambrini Phillos explores the shape of a circle and all that can be found within it.
In Flight is a testament to the hard work and dedication of these eight seniors and their commitment to the cultivation of their talents through the Maggie Walker Art program. They hope you will join them for their opening on Friday, May 10th from 6-8 pm at ArtWorks Gallery (320 Hull Street, Richmond, VA 23224). The exhibition will be on display through Saturday, May 18th.
