When Elizabeth I came to the throne at age 25, public debate immediately turned to the prospect of marriage. From Parliament to the Privy Council in England, and from monarchs and ministers in Europe, many lobbied for their choice as the world waited for the queen to make a decision. While she had many eager prospects, in the end, Elizabeth I was the only English monarch to rule as an adult and never marry. Why did she remain single? Did she ever really wish to marry? Was there anyone who truly held her heart?
