“Rhythms of the Rumba” Dance Class @ Washington Duke Inn & Golf Club
The Washington Duke Inn & Golf Club, a distinctive, AAA Four Diamond hotel property located on Duke University's campus, is hosting a beginner-friendly dance class, titled “Rhythms of the Rumba,” on Thursday, May 23 from 6-8 p.m. to introduce participants to the iconic steps, sweeping music and rich history of the popular social dance style. Led by Jordan Jewell of Move With Grace Ballroom, the dance class explores the incredible versatility of “Cuban Motion” – the playful sway of the body and hips. The style’s slow rhythm and fluid movements, paired with traditional Rumba music and pop favorites alike, gives it the reputation as “the dance of love.”
Adding to the immersive experience, guests will then venture to the Inn’s beloved Vista Restaurant to enjoy an intimate Q&A session to learn about the cultural context and origins of the dance style they just mastered. The imaginative culinary team will also serve a complimentary sample of a specialty cocktail inspired by the unique culture and flavor profiles of the time period.

Beginners are welcome, and dancers may register alone or as a couple (please complete a separate registration form for each participant).
Jewell, the owner of Durham-based Move With Grace Ballroom, joined the competitive ballroom circuit shortly after he began dancing at the age of 17. After competing for Purdue University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for four years, he transitioned into the world of teaching. Throughout his professional journey, Jordan has trained with world-renowned ballroom dancers as a professional instructor and won numerous awards on the competitive dance floor.
The "Rhythms of the Rumba” dance class is part of the “Step Into Summer” Dance Series – a weekly program hosted by the Inn and the neighboring JB Duke Hotel inviting guests to journey back in time and experience the magic of social dance. Interested participants can explore the additional class offerings via the registration link above, including “Tango for Two,” “Swing in Style” and “Wonders of the Waltz.”
