A Mother's Guide Through Autism


Landmark on Main Street, The Nicolas Center and Town of North Hempstead Councilwoman Mariann Dalimonte present "A Mother's Guide Through Autism...Autism, Neurodiversity, Services and Support". This author presentation and panel Q&A, moderated by Stella Spankos, will feature author Brigitte Shipman and her new book. Moderator: Stella L. Spanakos, Innovator, educator and advocate and Co-Founder, The Nicholas Center and Spectrum Designs Foundation – 2 non-profit organizations that have revolutionized the way Autistic adults learn, live and work. In 2018 a documentary film was made about her journey entitled, This Business of Autism (https://thisbusinessofautism.com/.) The film has been screened at over 20 film festivals in the United States and abroad, including a screening in Washington, DC in the U.S. Capital. Panelists: 1. Brigitte Shipman – author, educator, speaker, life coach and mother to 2 adult sons. She co-authored the book, A Mother’s Guide Through Autism with her son Joseph, a young man with Autism. She was an educator in the public schools for 20 years and holds a Masters Deree in Educational Leadership. Snow, MD - A practicing pediatrician for 35 years, Dr. Snow was born and raised in New York City. She attended City College of NY (CCNY), Albany Medical College and then continued her training at Albany Medical Center University Hospital. She resides on Long Island with her husband. They have 3 sons. The youngest of which has Autism Spectrum Disorder. 3. Dale A. Coffin Ed.D, OTR/L, Clinical Associate Professor and Chairperson, Occupational Therapy Program, Stony Brook University. She has been an Occupational Therapist since 1993. She received her Doctorate degree in Higher Education & Leadership. Her area of specialty is in Pediatrics (Early Intervention/Pre-School) and Sensory Integration. Dale has published research studies on Service Learning, the use of the Virtual Gaming with Pre-School populations and therapeutic intervention with Head-Start programs. In 2014 Dr. Coffin began Service-Learning Trips & Virtual Telehealth sessions to Belize, in conjunction with The Inspiration Center. Through her supervision, hundreds of children are serviced each year with needed therapy, equipment and plans of care. She is a mom of 3, and has a 25-year-old son on the Spectrum. Dr. Coffin serves on the Board of The Nicholas Center. 4. Jeremy Scalchunes, BCBA, Associate Executive Director of Programs at The Nicholas Center. He is a NYS Board-Certified Behavior Analyst and a Licensed Behavior Analyst. He authored The Nicholas Center’s Clinical Approach document which emphasizes best practices and the ethical and person-centered use of Applied Behavior Analysis for Adults on the Autism Spectrum. 4. Jeremy Scalchunes, BCBA, Associate Executive Director of Programs at The Nicholas Center. He is a NYS Board-Certified Behavior Analyst and a Licensed Behavior Analyst. He authored The Nicholas Center’s Clinical Approach document which emphasizes best practices and the ethical and person-centered use of Applied Behavior Analysis for Adults on the Autism Spectrum. The Nicholas Center has revolutionized the way Autistic adults learn, live and work. The Port Washington-based non-profit acts as agents of change to inspire, encourage and motivate communities to include Autistic individuals in all facets of life and word. The organization supports individuals to learn critical life skills, improve social and communication abilities, gain meaningful vocational training, and engage in community projects.In 2020, the organization expanded services to Westchester County, NY. A 4th generation Port Washington resident, her love of the community has been reflected in her passionate engagement with local organizations, including The Nicholas Center. Mariann’s service evolved to also include key roles in important organizations that achieved significant successes for the community and its residents. More importantly, she built a reputation for bringing people together.
