Crystal Blue Persuasion, Crimson & Clover, Mony Mony, I Think We’re Alone Now, Hanky Panky, Sweet Cherry Wine, Mirage, Draggin’ the Line, and Three Times in Love are just some of Tommy’s 32 Billboard Hot 100 chart hits.
With 23 gold singles, 9 platinum albums, and over 100 million records sold worldwide, Tommy James is a true music legend. He was honored with a BMI Five Million-Air Award for over 21 million radio plays, and his music has appeared in 122 TV shows, 106 films, and countless commercials.
Tommy’s story began in the heart of New York City, where he wrote and recorded some of his biggest hits. Many of Tommy’s chart-topping tracks were created at the legendary Brill Building—an epicenter of American pop songwriting often referred to as a “Hit Factory”—and recorded across the street at the Allegro Sound Studios.
Just a few doors away, at Roulette Records—then located near 49th and Broadway—Tommy signed his first record deal, unaware that the label was co-founded by Morris Levy, a man widely reported to have deep ties to the Genovese crime family. Levy, notorious for exploiting artists, was a powerful music executive who played a major role in shaping the business side of rock and pop music during the 1960s. His connections to the mob and his ruthless tactics in the music industry left a lasting imprint on the era. Tommy’s critically acclaimed memoir, Me, the Mob, and the Music—named one of Rolling Stone’s Top 25 Rock Memoirs—dives into the gripping real-life story behind the music. The book is currently being developed for a feature film or streaming series.
During this period, Tommy lived at 888 8th Avenue. Because so many entertainers and musicians lived at 888--including Linda Eastman before she became Mrs. Paul McCartney, Keith, The Cowsills, and Arnie Silver from The Dovells--it was often referred to as the “celebrity building.” It was from the terrace of his apartment that Tommy spotted a glowing sign atop the Mutual of New York (MONY) building on 60th Street. It was the iconic moment that inspired the title for Mony Mony--one of his biggest hits.
Tommy continues to influence artists across generations and genres. Billy Idol, Joan Jett, Prince, R.E.M., Kelly Clarkson, Bruce Springsteen, and even The Boston Pops, have all covered his songs.
