The Sandy Rollman Ovarian Cancer Foundation and lead sponsor Carlino's is rolling out the red carpet for this year's fund raising gala, Philadelphia Stars Shine for Ovarian Cancer. On Saturday, September 27, attendees will gather at the spectacular event space at Amtrak's 30th Street Station for an evening of Hollywood glamour and to show their support for raising awareness and funds for this terrifying disease. WPVI 6ABC's Amy Buckman will help lead the evening's special program. Dr. Stephanie King, MD of Hahnemann University Hospital will be honored with the Angela Carlino Excellence in Ovarian Cancer Research/Care Award, and a survivor will be recognized for her advocacy work in the community with the Spirit of Survivorship Award. FOX 29's Sue Serio will be on hand to present these special recognitions. Exciting prizes – including a trip to Hollywood, one of Jon Bon Jovi's signed guitars and dinner at home for 10 prepared by Carlino's – will be part of a live auction. Awareness is currently the most important factor in the fight against ovarian cancer. Though hardly known, it is the fourth leading cause of cancer death among women, affecting 1 out of every 55 women. However, when detected early, the survival rate is 90-95 percent. The Sandy Rollman Cancer Foundation advocates for early diagnostic testing and more effective treatments, and raises funds to advance research.
