New Bedford JazzFest (NBJF) continues its Acoustic Jazz Series on Sunday, June 15, with the John Allmark & Dino Govoni Quintet. The band will feature: John Allmark on trumpet and Dino Govoni on tenor sax. The concert will take place from 4:00-6:00 PM at the newly renovated venue, the historic Steeple Playhouse, 159 William Street, New Bedford. Tickets are available at steepleplayhouse.org.
Originally from the UK, John Allmark studied with jazz greats such as Freddie Hubbard and Hal Crook. He embarked on a career as a jazz trumpet player, arranger and band leader. He has led his group for over 30 years, and has performed with many great jazz artists such as Randy Brecker, Claudio Roditi, Grover Washington, Jr. John has performed throughout Europe, South America, Russia, and throughout the United States.
Undoubtedly, one of the most versatile contemporary saxophonists on the jazz scene is Dino Govoni. Govoni studied with two tenor sax greats, Jerry Bergonzi and George Garzone, and furthered his studies by attending Berklee College of Music. He later studied with the legendary Joe Viola.
Right out of college Govoni went on the road with a variety of musical outfits, playing and/or recording with such diverse artists as Grover Washington Jr., Randy Brecker, Queen Latifah, Terence Trent D'Arby, Mel Tormé, the Boston Pops, the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, Frankie Valli, among others.
Allmark and Govoni will be accompanied by Rusty Hughes on keyboards, Evan Carley on bass, and special guest, Grammy award winning drummer Mark Walker.
Early bird tickets are $22-$25, with general admission $27 at the door. All tickets are available at steepleplayhouse.org. The festival takes place rain or shine, as it is indoors. The building is completely accessible to all, and there is free parking on the street, as well as in the adjacent parking lot and Elm Street Parking Garage.
Doors will open at 3:30 PM. Acoustic Jazz concerts will have concessions and soft drinks available for purchase. The series will continue in July, and August, with local live acoustic jazz in an informal setting, ideal for questions and conversation. Stay tuned for upcoming concerts in the Acoustic Jazz Series on July 20 and August 24.
