Candidates Speed Dating
The mid-term election is several months away; however, now is the time for those looking to hold elected offices at the local and state levels to start meeting constituents and hearing about the issues impacting the community.
Anyone interested in learning more about these future leaders may attend the candidates Speed Dating Event happening early next month.
This program, sponsored by the North Smithfield Democratic Town Committee, takes place on Saturday, February 7, from 2:30 to 5:00 PM, at Village Haven, located on 90 School Street, Forestdale.
Scheduled to appear at this event include already feature all three candidates for State Attorney General: Kim Ahern, Keith Hoffman, and Jason Knight, along with individuals running for Governor, Secretary of State, U.S. Senate, and Treasurer.
Committee Chair Paul Jones said this type of forum gives all candidates an invaluable opportunity.
“Our goal was to get voters engaged with the topics affecting them and allowing the candidates to respond to tough questions and concerns in real time,” he said. “This is unfiltered access to our future elected leaders, the opportunity for attendees to get real answers to their questions, and for candidates to focus on issues that are clearly on the voters’ minds.”
The Candidates Speed Dating Event format is as follows: candidates will be seated at a table with a small group of voters so they can introduce themselves and answer voter questions. After a set amount of time, the hosts will announce that it’s time to switch tables; the candidates will stay seated but a new voter or small group of voters will come sit at their table to hear the candidate’s story.
Jones said he hopes this concept will catch on elsewhere.
“People are sick of polished speeches and sound bites. They want real answers from the people asking for their vote,” Paul said.
Event tickets are $30. This includes the program, drinks, and food. People can also purchase a Host Committee ticket, which will grant access to a pre-program lunch with the candidates. Tickets for the luncheon plus the program are $250 each.
