Yoleros is set in the Eastern region of the Dominican Republic, in the coastal area of Miches, Samana, during the 1980s. The play follows Máximo, Dinora, and Demecio as they search for ways to escape poverty and create a better life. Máximo, a cunning raffle ticket salesman, convinces Dinora and Demecio to buy into his raffle which offers a spot upon his yola (a small handmade boat) as the grand prize. When they both win the raffle, Dinora and Demecio become "Yoleros" with Máximo on his maritime journey to Puerto Rico. Each character makes unimaginable sacrifices as they embark on the life-threatening journey across the Mona Passage into the open Carribean Sea. Even if they successfully sail across the ocean, will they be turned around for lack of proper documentation? Though the risks are at an all time high, these three keep their eyes on the reward of a better life. This play has a dramatic conclusion when the characters find themselves lost, hungry, and desperate in the middle of the Caribbean Sea, and a final event tests each one's values.
