Free Concert-"Nature, Myth and Majesty"-Chamber Orchestra of Barrington at St. John's-Sunday 9/28
Join us on Sunday, September 28 at 3 p.m. at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 191 County Rd., Barrington, for Maestro Luis Viquez’s inaugural concert as the new Music Director of the Chamber Orchestra of Barrington at St. John’s. The program, Nature, Myth, and Majesty, features works inspired by the natural world, legend, and classical grandeur.
The performance opens with Felix Mendelssohn’s evocative Hebrides Overture. Through masterful orchestration, Mendelssohn takes listeners on a 10-minute journey to the mysterious Fingal’s Cave on a remote Scottish island, filled with rolling waves, sweeping winds, and moments of serene beauty.
The program continues with the world premiere of the chamber orchestra version of Otohime Concerto for Double Bass by Eliane Aberdam, featuring Joseph Bentley as soloist. Inspired by a Japanese folktale the composer first heard in childhood, the piece is rich in imagination and color. Both Aberdam and Bentley are prominent figures in the New England music scene and serve on the faculty at the University of Rhode Island.
The concert concludes with Symphony No. 104 in D Major by Franz Joseph Haydn, his final full symphony, composed during a triumphant visit to London in 1795. The work is filled with bold fanfares, playful melodies, and a finale bursting with rhythmic energy—a majestic farewell from one of the Classical era’s great masters.
In appreciation of St. John’s Episcopal Church, which graciously partners with COBSJ as the orchestra’s artistic home, attendees are encouraged to bring a canned food item for the church’s Outreach program.
