Providence’s Historic Jewelry District

The Historic Jewelry District started as a residential community, moved on to the jewelry manufacturing center for the US and to today's commercial and residential uses. With those phases came changes in people, architecture and building techniques.
Among other topics, will discuss:
- the fact that, in 1900, Providence had the highest average income in the US
- what does Peter Lorre have to do with Providence's Jewelry Distric
- the history of the jewelry industry (why did costume jewelry take off in the 1930's?)
- stand at one intersection and discuss and compare the three main building types
- understand the former 195, its status and future.
