The Importance of Keeping Proper Books

Arianna Swink is not only the co-owner of TL6 the Gallery, she is also a Tax Preparer/Enrolled Agent at MJ Tax and Business Services. In this three-part series, she will cover the importance of financials along with co-presenter and fellow tax prep expert Jessica Prince. In the first session, Selecting a Business Entity, participants will learn about business entity types such as Sole Proprietor, LLC, S-Corp, C-Corp, and Partnership, and what might be a good fit for them. The second session will review how to maintain your books and some helpful “do's and dont's.” The final session will cover things to do when starting a new business, such as registering an EIN with the IRS and setting up sales tax with the state. Peer-to-Peer Sessions is a free and accessible (mostly) online series geared to enrich, educate, and connect creatives through a series of workshops and training sessions. New Bedford is the home of artists, creatives, change makers, designers, entrepreneurs and community enthusiasts and the Peer-to-Peer Sessions embraces the pulse that makes New Bedford so unique while expanding our knowledge and connections. Funding for this initiative is provided by the City of New Bedford, through American Rescue Plan awards, and its Arts, Culture and Tourism Fund. Additional support comes from the Barr Foundation and Bristol County Savings Bank. Peer-to-Peer Sessions is one component of a larger initiative to support arts-based economic development. More about MJ Tax Services: Arianna Swink is a graduate from UMass Dartmouth's jewelry metals program. She co-founded Tenacious Lilly Jewelers in 2002 and TL6 The Gallery in 2008, keeps all of the books and records for both businesses, and has been an Enrolled Agent since 2011. Jessica Prince has also been an Enrolled Agent since 2011 and opened her own tax business in 2013. In 2015 she acquired an existing tax business that she still owns and runs to this day. More about New Bedford Creative: New Bedford Creative is housed at the New Bedford Economic Development Council and tasked with implementing the city’s first-ever strategic arts and culture plan. The vision of the plan is that “In New Bedford, the creative community is an engaged and powerful partner, inspiring social, economic, and cultural growth. In this authentic seaport city, each and every person enjoys an opportunity to experience a diversity of cultures. Art is everywhere, encouraging fun, provoking thought, and nurturing the soul.” To learn more, visit newbedfordcreative.org.
