Frequently organizations put out calls for submissions of art for logos, murals and other creative work. They couch it as a “contest” where you get to do the work and maybe “win” a prize that is a small fraction of what the design work would cost if they hired a creative or a team to do the work at market rates. They generally also require you to transfer all your intellectual property rights to them without compensation whether you “win” or not. That, is essentially, extortion. They often couch it as providing you exposure. But remember, exposure is not something you can exchange for anything of value (see our workshop on that). While it may not be intentional this is still exploitation. This workshop is about how, as creatives, we need to stop this and spread the word about how to hire creatives in a professional manner when we see such “contests” advertised. Creatives who do design work are professionals. They should be treated so when you need their skills. We’ll be discussing how to properly solicit and hire designers, muralists, etc. and get great results including concrete examples.
This workshop will be held on zoom.
You must register in advance.
