This remarkable 300 page publication explores carving traditions from across the Pacific that developed alongside whaling routes - from New Bedford to Oceania, and the Arctic- while challenging long-standing assumptions about scrimshaw.
Often seen as the domain of White, male, New England whalers, scrimshaw is in fact a global art form with deep ties to Indigenous material culture. The New Bedford Whaling Museums' collection tells a more complex and diverse story, brining together works from across the Pacific world.
