Reflections Exhibition Lecture and Talk

Join the New Bedford Whaling Museum on Thursday, May 9 at 5:30 PM - AHA! Night - in the San Francisco Gallery for an exhibition tour and talk about "Reflections." The photography collection at the New Bedford Whaling Museum is replete with views of and about the water, often with reflections on the water doubling images of the sun, sails, or wharves above it. In general, water asks humans to reflect: the ocean is a vast space with a visual blankness that lends itself to contemplative meditation. As Herman Melville writes in Moby-Dick, “Yes, as everyone knows, meditation and water are wedded forever.” Marina Dawn Wells, the New Bedford Whaling Museum Photography Collection Curatorial Fellow, will discuss how the theme of Reflections runs throughout their exhibition of the same name. This intimate tour will ask questions of how we take time to reflect, prompting attendees to engage in reflection themselves. Guests are invited to the third floor San Francisco Gallery, and out onto the Harbor View Deck for this event. This program is 1 of 2 scheduled at the Whaling Museum on this AHA! Night. It will be followed by the Songs of the Sea concert in the museum's Cook Memorial Theater at 6:30 PM (registration required). What is AHA!? AHA! (Art, History, Architecture) provides a free platform for New Bedford’s creative community to showcase their talents collectively, making arts, culture, and creative expression accessible to all.
