Part IV– “Nuts!”: The Battle of the Bulge – December 1944-January 1945
This lecture covers the period in the autumn of 1944 with the Allied attempts to break through the German defenses and into the heart of the German industrial areas of the Saar and Ruhr across a broad front stretching from the North Sea to the Swiss border that prompted the German last gasp offensive to break the Allied positions and capture Antwerp, Belgium. In the operation, codenamed Unternehmen Wacht am Rhein (Operation Watch on the Rhine), German infantry and armored forces attacked through the Ardennes Forest and initially drove a deep wedge into American lines, thus inspiring the name, The Battle of the Bulge, which lasted from 16 December 1944 until late January 1945. Stout defenses by the 101st US Airborne Division at the crossroads town of Bastogne, Belgium and the commander’s response of “Nuts!” to a German surrender demand are iconic features of Germany’s last effort to stop the Allied advance.
