NOW AND THEN AGAIN Jolie Stahl Solo Exhibition
The exhibition marks Jolie Stahl’s second solo show with Jessica Hagen’s gallery and features a collection of the artist’s paintings created in the 1980s, as well as current ceramic work. The exhibit is contemporaneous with the publication of the catalogue Gifted from Jolie Stahl to the RISD Museum, 2024 showcasing the museum’s recent accession of over fifty important works of art donated by the artist. Among the artwork included in the gift are twelve pieces by Stahl herself, as well as works by Philip Guston, Lois Dodd, Rosemary Beck, Nan Goldin, and other prominent artists who were working in the mid to late 20th century. Kiki Smith, a close collaborator with Jolie Stahl in the late 1970s and early 1980s is also represented in the collection. In addition to Smith’s artwork, images of the artist are featured in photographs and paintings by Stahl. Paintings of Smith will be included among the work being shown at Jessica Hagen’s gallery. The exhibit, like its 2021 predecessor Jolie Stahl: Then & Now, is a demonstration of the fusion of female strength and beauty and a well-deserved nod to the particular importance of women working in the New York art world in the latter third of the 20th century. “Jolie Stahl’s contributions to the art world are deep and far reaching and Stahl continues to be a creative force,” states Jessica Hagen, “I am honored to once again be presenting a solo exhibition of her work.”
