June 19 Panel at Imago Gallery explores ‘Why Art Matters’
Imago Foundation for the Arts (IFA) will host a panel discussion on “Why Art Matters” from 6:30 – 8 p.m. Thursday, June 19 at Imago Gallery, 36 Market Street, Warren, RI. The public is invited to attend this free event.
Featured IFA Exhibiting Artist Linda Megathlin will host and facilitate the event.
Panelists include:
Lee Clasper-Torch, a retired faculty member at Moses Brown School in Providence, Rhode Island, who is currently leading workshops in philosophy, spirituality, and meditation.
Jannelle Codianni, executive director of New Urban Arts in Providence, RI, who is passionate about enhancing community resilience through collective action and equitable access to the arts.
Wendy Grossman, an activities therapist, and coordinator of the Healing Arts Program at Butler Hospital, a psychiatric hospital located in Providence, Rhode Island.
Jason Ramsay, an assistant professor, vertebrate morphologist, biomechanist and illustrator at Rhode Island College.
Megathlin became interested in the topic of why art matters as she prepared the artwork for her featured exhibit now on display at Imago Gallery which she calls “And Yet, Beauty Persists.”
While preparing her work, she asked questions about what is perceived as beauty, and, why at times like these, it seems especially important to acknowledge beauty and its role throughout human history. As Ralph Waldo Emerson has written, “When it is dark enough you can see the stars.”
Megathlin will engage panelists in a discussion about the nature of the artist’s creative inspiration, art’s influence throughout human history, the relationship between nature and beauty, its role in religion and spiritual practices, its effect on community, human connectedness and a person’s sense of wellbeing, and why it’s important to keep practicing and appreciating art, especially in times like these.
