Frances Perkins Goes to Washington!

The country's first female cabinet secretary (Secretary of Labor in the FDR administration), Frances expanded factory investigations, reduced the workweek to 40 hours, and championed minimum wage and unemployment insurance laws. She worked vigorously to put an end to child labor and to provide safety for workers. Without Frances, there would be no social security. Franklin D. Roosevelt appointed Frances Perkins to head a Committee on Economic Security, where she forged the blueprint of legislation finally enacted as the Social Security Act. Join us this evening to learn more about this forgotten hero and how her story can ensure we continue to provide for ourselves and future generations the way she intended. It is not necessary to have seen Part 1 of the Frances Perkins series (hosted by the Library in November 2023) in order to enjoy this performance. Free event. Registration encouraged: visit https://tinyurl.com/FranPerk2CumbReg or call the Library at 401-333-2552
