The Fight that Saved the Libraries: A True Rhode Island Story by Linda J. Kushner
"It's great that the story of Linda Kushner, and the community leaders who came together to save Providence's community libraries, is being told. I've witnessed and been a part of many advocacy efforts over the years--but this one stands out to me because of the determination and persistence with which it was organized. And, because of the incredibly important result--the preservation of community libraries for all of the people of Providence."--David Cicilline
Author Linda J. Kushner will speak about her part in the controversial split between PPL, the Providence Public Library system, and what would become Providence Community Library, now renamed Community Libraries of Providence.
With a small group of reformers, Linda launched a five year battle garnering the support of thousands of Rhode Islanders. It ended in 2009 with the creation of a new community library system which preserved all of Providence’s nine neighborhood libraries.
Linda J. Kushner is a retired attorney who represented the East Side as a state legislator for 12 years, from 1982 to 1994. Always a problem solver and social organizer, in 2004 Linda turned her attention to the neighborhood libraries which were in danger of being extinguished.
