Only Squares Apply

The Wickford Art Association presented Only Squares Apply, a juried exhibition celebrating the creative possibilities of the 1:1 square format. The subject was entirely open and did not need to relate to squares. All media—including sculpture—adhered to the square format and was professionally finished. To maintain the cohesion of the geometric theme, framed works were required to use both square mats and square frames, ensuring that every piece reflected the structural balance of the square format. Juror Suzanne Volmer selected a diverse group of works exploring composition, color, texture, pattern, abstraction, and subject within the unique boundaries of the square. An internationally exhibited artist, Volmer had shown her sculptures, installations, and drawings in galleries and museums in the U.S. and abroad. She was also an art critic and member of the International Association of Art Critics, with writing published in Artscope, Sculpture Magazine, and Arts Magazine. Her extensive background in contemporary art and sculpture brought a distinctive perspective to the selection of works for Only Squares Apply. The exhibition demonstrated how a simple, defined format could inspire an extraordinary range of artistic expression.
