Circling the Sun: International Women's Day in Song

On Sunday, March 10, celebrate women composers as mezzo soprano Amy Stuart Hunn, soprano Christine Johnson, and pianist Susan McDaniel explore the vulnerability of love, pain, and life though song! "Circling the Sun" is a program that ranges from the ebullient optimism of Amy Beach’s "The Year’s at the Spring," to ethereal and visceral meditations on trauma by Melissa Dunphy, to the evocative, timeless tunes of Joni Mitchell. At the intersection of romantic love and mystical experience are selections from Alma Mahler's lush and complex "Fünf Lieder" as well as Gwyneth Walker’s expansive and joyous settings of Rumi. Clara Schumann Lieder and Fanny Hensel duets round out this afternoon of fine music making. Amy sings with a warm, mellow tone and unparalleled, expressive musicianship. She is the director of Radix Vocal Ensemble and has performed with Resonance, 45th Parallel, and In Mulieribus. Christine is an experienced recitalist, warming many a hall and home with her “voice of burnished bronze” and engaging performances. She has appeared with Resonance, Cappella Romana, and Radix Vocal Ensemble. Amy and Christine also sing together in the Trinity Episcopal Cathedral Choir and Schola! Susan is a sought-after collaborator in the region, known for her sensitivity and authenticity. She is a lecturer in collaborative piano and lyric diction at University of Portland and has collaborated extensively in the region and abroad. This concert in honor of International Women's Day will help raise money for Radix Vocal Ensemble, creating community through joyful, authentic performances.
