Homestead 1892: Exploring the Lockout and Strike with The Frick Pittsburgh and Rivers of Steel
Co-presented by The Frick Pittsburgh and Rivers of Steel, this special program investigates the lasting impact of the 1892 Homestead Lockout and Strike, 133 years after that fateful July.
Begin the morning with a guided tour of Carrie Blast Furnace to understand the realities of the Pittsburgh steel and iron industries, followed by rare access to the Pump House for an exploration of the events of July 1892, including the deadly conflict between workers and Pinkerton agents. Next, travel to The Frick Pittsburgh for a deeper investigation of Henry Clay Frick’s relationship to labor and his decisions during that summer on a custom tour of Clayton.
Advanced registration and pre-payment are required. Program begins at Carrie Blast Furnace; participants are responsible for their own transportation. Registration includes admission to Carrie Blast Furnace, the Pump House, and Clayton, as well as a boxed lunch.
Program Schedule (times are approximate):
9:30-10:40 am – Tour of Carrie Blast Furnace
10:40-10:50 am – Travel to The Pump House
10:50-11:45 am – Tour of The Pump House
11:45 am-12:00 pm – Depart for the Frick
12:00-1:00 pm – Lunch at the Frick
1:00-2:30 pm – Tour Clayton
By purchasing registration, all visitors are required to sign a liability waiver and consent to be photographed while visiting Carrie Blast Furnace.
