Following the success of last year’s inaugural event, Skanska, a global construction and development firm with a major office in Phoenix, and Valors Veterans Community AZ, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting Veterans’ transitions to civilian life, will host their second annual Veterans Career Fair on Friday, September 19 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. in Tempe.
The fair brings together nearly 20 employers across the construction industry – including notable names like Progressive Roofing, Green Tanner Industrial, K2 Electric, and more – providing Veterans and active-duty service members with one-on-one access to hiring teams, mentorship, and job leads in fields like construction management, carpentry, HVAC, electrical, plumbing, roofing and more. Across the country and region, the construction industry has a significant and ongoing need for workers, with a national shortage of skilled tradespeople and laborers to meet the growing demand for projects.
Last year, the event helped kickstart powerful second careers. One Marine Corps Veteran called it “a turning point in my journey,” after he was hired into a safety leadership role at a local construction firm. “Despite not having prior industry experience, they saw potential in me and gave me a chance.”
This year, attendees also will have the chance to meet Peyton Stevens, a U.S. Army Veteran and BIM/VDC Engineer at Skanska. Drawing on his military background in technical engineering and his passion for technology, Peyton now uses drone technology to improve construction precision and safety on job sites. He will be available for interviews to speak about how military training can translate into high-demand roles in construction and technology.
