The musicians and lifelong friends enjoy getting together to read sonatas whenever they are in the same city, and, in 2018, they realized a longtime dream of recording Bach’s six sonatas for violin and keyboard. On their subsequent tours, they explored more recent works for the same instrument combination.
In this program, Pine and Vinikour complement Bach’s baroque sonata with three of their favorites from the 20th century—a fun and clever deconstruction of baroque-style dances from Alfred Schnittke, a joyful baroque suite from important Black composer Adolphus Hailstork, and an appealing, Americana-flavored sonata from Samuel Alder—and works from Domenico Scarlatti and George Frideric Handel.
