Concerts at Christ Church - "Basso Ostinato" - Sunday, November 16 at 4:30 pm

This concert will feature CCA Music Director Tigran Buniatyan on organ and harpsichord. At first glance, Renaissance music and jazz may seem worlds apart—separated by centuries, cultures, and musical language. Yet, both genres are united by a core principle: the spirit of improvisation. Despite their differences, these music styles share a historical kinship in how they use a repeated bass line as a springboard for creativity. The title of this concert, Basso Ostinato (also known as Ground Bass), refers to a foundational musical technique common to both Renaissance and Baroque music, later echoed in jazz. A short, repeating bass line provides the structure for the musical piece, allowing musicians the opportunity to improvise and embellish freely above it and explore new harmonies, textures, and ornamentation. Baroque and Renaissance composers used these ostinato patterns as a canvas to display their inventiveness and virtuosity, resulting in some of the era’s most vibrant and engaging music. This upcoming concert at Christ Church celebrates that timeless interplay between structure and freedom. Featuring the church’s historic organ and other period instruments, the program will explore the expressive possibilities of ground bass through works that span centuries—bridging the ancient and the modern through the universal language of improvisation.
