In the midst of a war and a volatile country, Afghanistan's capital Kabul has become home to a rare institution. Founded by the Hazara, one of the country's most persecuted minority groups, the Marefat School has thrived in providing a provocative and 21st century education to both boys and girls. Such a place has been able to grow under the protection of U.S. troops, but with their withdrawal on the horizon, the Marefat School faces a perilous situation.
Acclaimed journalist Jeffrey Stern will discuss his new book The Last Thousand: One School's Promise in a Nation at War, and describe in inspiring detail the effects of the school and consequences that the community surrounding the Marefat School will endure when it is left behind. And he will bring to the table a most timely question: when a U.S. presence has been established and proven helpful to vulnerable populations, what happens as the American occupation ends?
