Two Americans Who Defied the Nazis

Public Program United States Holocaust Memorial Museum In early 1939, Waitstill and Martha Sharp, a young Unitarian minister and social worker, went to great lengths to provide aid to refugees fleeing Nazi persecution. They moved to Prague as representatives of the American Unitarian Association, and despite enormous bureaucratic hurdles at every step, they helped hundreds of people find safe passage to unoccupied countries and secure jobs and scholarships. Learn more about how these two Americans responded to the threat of Nazism and increasing persecution of the Jews, as told through selections of an upcoming documentary,˜Defying the Nazis: The Sharps' War', and through their collection of personal papers that has been donated to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.
