To celebrate the visit of Pope Francis to Philadelphia, Salvatore Mangione, MD, will examine the medical and scientific evidence behind the famous burial cloth, and what the linen can tell us about the death of Jesus Christ.
The Shroud of Turin is the alleged burial cloth of Christ, and since its first historical appearance at the end of the 14th century it has baffled scientists, irritated skeptics, and awed believers. Carbon dating from 1988 dated the linen to 1260-1390, and yet recent evidence suggested that measurements were actually carried out on a medieval re-weave.
Dr. Mangione is Associate Professor of Medicine and Associate Program Director for the Internal Medicine residency at Jefferson Medical College. He has a long interest in Physical Diagnosis, Medical History and community service, and is also the author of the book Secrets in Physical Diagnosis. In this special program he will explore the physical and chemical evidence surrounding the famous linen, and what that means for our understanding of its historical context.
