PRISM Quartet, a world-renowned all-saxophone ensemble, is joining forces with violinist and Pew Fellow Diane Monroe, poet/vocalist and Pew Fellow Ursula Rucker, and percussionist and Pulitzer Prize winner Tyshawn Sorey to present a concert in NYC of music from their residency at the Free Library of Philadelphia. The program will feature world premieres of works by rising stars from PRISM’s Unlocking Your Inner Composer project.
PRISM co-founder and tenor saxophonist Matthew Levy writes, “Unlocking Your Inner Composer is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for talented emerging composers to create original music for a stellar lineup of musicians. Fifty composers will be represented in three concerts at the Free Library of Philadelphia with an additional performance of select works at NYC’s Jazz Gallery as the culmination of our residency. Unlocking is rooted in cross-cultural exchange, dialogue, and deep listening with the goal of empowering participants who represent a vast range of cultural traditions to develop their artistic voices. An outgrowth of PRISM’s Generate Music project — which also involved Tyshawn, Ursula, and Diane — our prompt to participating composers is rooted in community: to create works that build bridges of understanding and foster a sense of belonging.”
